This is Nik, Kashtin's sister. She is our
woolly girl. Have to trust me on this one, Lassie would die for her coat.

The picture centre left gives you an idea of
what I mean by woolly. This picture was taken in mid August. As you
can see, everyone else is bald but not Nik. At one time I loved her coat (not
knowing any better). It was so soft and what a little fuzz ball she was as a
baby - soooo cute! First time she blew her coat, well the birds had enough fuzz
to last a lifetime, the garbage men thought I had a new baby, & garbage bags were on
my shopping list every week. I was glad to see my first winter with her.
Not! That soft coat picked up ice, and the hair between her toes made it very
hard for her to enjoy herself in harness because she was always stopping to pull it
out. By the time that first winter had ended, I had made her 15 pairs of winter
booties and used up two jars of Vaseline. My personal motto: NEVER GIVE UP. So
what is the correct coat? To me, one of good length with the texture of moose
hair.

Nakeetha will never be my Nikki Wild Dog Of
the North, not as far as sledding goes, but I have tried to make it more enjoyable
for her when she's out with the others. Nik excels in other areas like baseball,
bird catching, and, during a past summer, her WCDE "Working Canoe Dog Excellent". At
least she didn't dump anyone into the lake. |
